In a significant move towards urban regeneration, Ion Property Developments has unveiled plans to transform the historic Birkenhead Gas Works site into a state-of-the-art eco-friendly community, named the Hind Street Urban Garden Village. This ambitious project is set to house a primary school and a sprawling 648,000 sq ft of commercial area.

The company has officially submitted their vision to the Wirral Council, awaiting approval. One of the major changes proposed is the removal of the Queensway Tunnel flyovers, making way for the expansive 65-acre garden village. Additionally, there’s a plan on the table to repurpose the old Dock Branch railway into a bustling active travel corridor, promoting sustainable modes of transport.

Steve Parry, the Managing Director of Ion, expressed his enthusiasm about the project, highlighting its potential to redefine Birkenhead’s urban landscape. “This isn’t just about building homes; it’s about creating a connected, green, and vibrant community,” Parry commented. He further added that the development aims to provide residents with enhanced connectivity to the town centre and major transport hubs, including Liverpool.

Local authorities have shown keen interest in the project, exploring a potential £41m grant to kickstart the construction of the first batch of 600 homes. This initiative underscores the commitment to sustainable urban development and promises a brighter, greener future for Wirral residents.
