The Derry City and Strabane District Council has initiated a public consultation to gather insights and opinions on the proposed Newtownstewart Town Centre Regeneration Framework. Starting today, the four-week consultation is accessible via the Council’s website, inviting feedback from residents, local businesses, and community stakeholders on the draft framework.

This draft document outlines strategies for enhancing Newtownstewart’s town centre, focusing on areas such as streetscape improvements, heritage preservation, access and parking solutions, connectivity, business development, tourism, community safety, and security. These recommendations have been formulated after comprehensive discussions with key local stakeholders, aiming to address current challenges and foster a positive transformation in the town centre.

The Regeneration Framework sets forth a vision for the economic, social, and environmental revitalisation of Newtownstewart over the next five to ten years. It identifies key issues and provides a roadmap for actionable solutions to rejuvenate the town centre.

Ruairi McHugh, Chair of the Council’s Environment & Regeneration Committee, has called on the community to actively participate in this consultation process. The Council has already undertaken extensive research and stakeholder engagement to pinpoint the town centre’s pressing challenges and potential remedies. McHugh emphasised the importance of community feedback in shaping the final action plan, stating the Council’s dedication to securing the resources needed for the Framework’s implementation.

The Council encourages all interested parties to contribute their perspectives and ideas to help shape the future of Newtownstewart Town Centre. The consultation period will end at 4pm on Monday, 11th March 2024, marking a crucial step towards realising a shared vision for the town’s regeneration.
