The conversion of one of the British Waterways Building – one of Nottingham’s most recognisable buildings – into new waterside flats is being tipped for approval.

Council officers have recommended that the plan to convert the landmark into 95 apartments be given the greenlight.

Councillors will vote on proposals for the listed property, situated off the Nottingham and Beeston Canal in Castle Wharf, at the city council’s next planning committee meeting on September 21.

Conservationists said they were pleased some of the building’s most distinctive features would be preserved.

Hilary Silvester, the executive chair of the Nottingham Civic Society, said: “The people of Nottingham in general have always liked the British Waterways building – I’ve always liked it too. It’s a bit like the Oxo building in London, people are quite fond of the lettering across the building and its history.

“The plan in principle we found to be acceptable, as it wasn’t going to have a big impact on the general environment. The lettering saying ‘British Waterways’ and the red brick is going to remain, and the building will retain its character.”

The British Waterways Building, formerly known as the Trent Navigation Company warehouse, is Grade II-listed. It was originally built in around 1919 for the storage and loading of goods and materials onto canal barges for transportation across the country.
