UK’s First Public Electric Heavy Goods Vehicle Charging Stations

Able Group hosted the launch event on March 5th 2025, of the UK’s first public Electric Heavy Goods Vehicle (EHGV) charging stations at the Able Humber Port (AHP) site in Immingham. The new EHGV charging hub will play a crucial role in decarbonising transport and logistics across AHP and the South Humber ports as electric-powered HGVs replace existing diesel fleets.

This phase includes four high-performance Combined Charging Systems (CCS) chargers powering eight bays, and one Megawatt Charging System (MCS) charger powering two bays. The hub also features lounge and welfare facilities, offering food and beverages. Future expansions will include more CCS and MCS chargers and enhanced amenities. The event hosted 140 attendees and marks a significant milestone in collaboration with Milence, a joint venture between Daimler Truck, TRATON GROUP (explain who is part of triton group as they are big brands), and Volvo Group

Milence wants to build out 1,700 charging points for such large vehicles across Europe by 2027 and the Immingham facility is the first such hub in the UK. “The opening of our first UK charge hub in Immingham marks a significant step in the UK’s transition to electric road transport,” said Milence’s CEO Anja van Niersen. “This strategically located site underscores our commitment to providing reliable and accessible charging infrastructure for the growing number of electric truck operators. This is just the first step in our UK expansion, and we are dedicated to working with all stakeholders to accelerate the shift towards a sustainable future for the transport industry.”

Phase one of the Immingham hub boasts four high-performance CCS chargers, providing access to eight charging bays and offering a power output of up to 400kW. The Immingham hub is situated off the A180 with direct access to the M180, M18, and M1 motorways. AHP at Immingham has over 30 Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) and Lo-Lo (lift-on/lift-off) sailings each week, providing the UK with a crucial trade link into Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Baltic regions.

Industry and business leaders attended the launch event, as did several representatives from North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire councils. During a speech to attendees, Ms van Niersen explained Milence’s vision to open up electric route corridors for HGVs in Europe with strategically sited charging hubs, like Immingham’s. In the UK, it aims to develop such a corridor between Immingham and Birmingham, Liverpool and Northampton. “The time to start thinking about HDVs or is it HGVs?, the time to think about electrification of HDV HGV?transport is now,” Milence’s CEO told attendees. Ms van Niersen expects the market to grow rapidly over coming years, with demand meaning 1,100 public charging points for HGVs are expected to be needed in the UK by 2030. North Lincolnshire Council deputy leader Cllr Richard Hannigan (Conservative – Ferry Ward) called the scheme “a wonderful innovation”, later adding: “They’re doing something groundbreaking in the UK here.” Cllr Hannigan added of local residents, “They know that HGVs are the lifeblood of the country. They want to see quiet, efficient, non-polluting HGVs on the road.”
