A proposed development in Brick Lane has been approved, which will see new offices, shops and restaurants built on the site of the Old Truman Brewery in East London.

Situated on Brick Lane and Woodseer Street, the Buckley Grey Yeoman-designed scheme involves constructing a part-five storey office building with ground and first-floor commercial units and a two-storey basement for plant, servicing, storage and a gym.

This will be linked to the reconfigured ground floor of an adjacent building and provision for commercial units, and the refurbishment and two-storey extension of the building at 25 Woodseer Street for office use with ground floor commercial space.

The approval comes after a High Court Challenge from a local group objecting to the scheme.

The planning case officer recommended that the scheme be approved subject to several conditions. These include financial obligations such as contributing £33,900 towards construction phase employment skills training, £151,869 towards end-user employment skills training and £196,650 towards carbon off-setting.

Other conditions include 20% local procurement, 20% local labour in construction, three construction phase apprenticeships and 10% of the proposed office space being affordable workspace at a 45% discount from market rates for a minimum period of 15 years.
