Far East Consortium (FEC), in partnership with Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), has announced ambitious plans to transform the site of the former Greater Manchester Police headquarters in Trafford into a vibrant new mixed-use neighbourhood.

The proposed masterplan, now entering its first stage of public consultation, outlines a vision for a 1,200-home sustainable community that combines high-quality housing, green spaces, and public amenities to support inclusive, multi-generational living.

The redevelopment forms a key part of Trafford’s Civic Quarter Area Action Plan, which aims to deliver transformative regeneration, create jobs, and improve connections across Stretford and surrounding areas. The plans include around 1,200 new homes, with 25 per cent designated as affordable housing for both social rent and shared ownership. Significant green and public spaces are proposed, including parks, landscaped gardens, leafy avenues, and a new civic square designed to promote wellbeing and community interaction.

In addition to housing, the development will feature shops, cafés, workspaces, and a 250-bed hotel, creating a lively and active neighbourhood. The site will be well connected through easy access to cycling routes and the nearby Trafford Bar Metrolink stop. The proposals also include the restoration of the historic Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall and the preservation of original site features such as the gateposts from its former use as a school for the blind. A district heat network energy centre is planned to provide low-carbon heating across the Civic Quarter, supporting Trafford’s environmental and climate goals.

The project is expected to create around 500 new jobs and deliver an inclusive public realm that encourages health, wellbeing, and social integration. FEC and its partners are working closely with local residents, businesses, and stakeholders through a two-stage consultation process to refine the masterplan ahead of a planning application submission in spring 2026.

The first stage of consultation runs until 8 December 2025, giving residents the opportunity to view proposals, attend drop-in events, and share feedback to help shape the final design.

The redevelopment of the former Greater Manchester Police headquarters site represents one of Trafford’s most significant regeneration schemes to date and aims to set a new benchmark for sustainable, community-first urban living in Greater Manchester.
