Great Portland Estates has secured planning approval from Camden Council for the comprehensive refurbishment of Whittington House, its West End headquarters office building in London. The project will retain the building’s architecture while introducing modern, sustainability-focused upgrades over eight storeys, including improved energy performance, enhanced building services, a new rooftop terrace, and a pavilion overlooking Alfred Place.

The refurbishment will deliver 74,500 sq ft of premium headquarters workspace, with completion scheduled for early 2027. GPE’s redevelopment strategy focuses on retaining and improving the existing structure to reduce embodied carbon, rather than pursuing a full demolition.

The project is part of GPE’s growing cluster of Grade A office spaces near Tottenham Court Road. Combined with the Gable and Courtyard Buildings, Whittington House will contribute to a total of 220,000 sq ft of high-spec office space in the area.

The scheme is designed to meet evolving occupier expectations for quality, flexibility, and amenities while preserving the building’s architectural heritage. The refurbishment will provide enhanced working environments and improved sustainability credentials for future tenants.

With planning permission secured, GPE will proceed with detailed design and pre-construction work ahead of the main building phase, targeting completion in the first quarter of 2027.
