Canterbury is poised for a significant expansion with the introduction of 2,000 new homes as part of a new development initiative spearheaded by the University of Kent. The proposed housing estate, strategically located between the villages of Tyler Hill, Blean, and Rough Common, is part of Canterbury City Council’s new draft local plan.

The development aims to create a “highly sustainable, freestanding settlement” which will not only offer new homes but also educational facilities, including a new primary school to replace the existing Blean Primary School. This initiative addresses the critical need for more housing in the area and is currently open for public consultation until June 3.

The University of Kent has offered the land for this potential development to generate additional funding for educational enhancements. The plan reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban development and housing scarcity in Canterbury.

The council has scheduled three public information sessions to provide more information and gather feedback from the community on this transformative project.
