Planning and Property: Wales Cardiff’s City Centre to get 2,500 New Homes November 17th, 2023 Mya Driver Cardiff Council has given the green light to a transformative urban regeneration project by Vastint UK, set to introduce 2,500 new homes along with substantial office and leisure spaces in the city centre. This ambitious development, named ‘The Embankment’, will rejuvenate 47 acres of brownfield land in the southern part of the city, near Butetown. The comprehensive project encompasses a 40-acre area stretching to the River Taff. It is designed to enhance the urban fabric by connecting Butetown, Grangetown, the city centre, and Cardiff Bay. The plan includes an impressive 54,000sqm of business space, adding significant opportunities for leisure, hospitality, and retail sectors. The Embankment scheme will replace what is currently underused industrial space with a vibrant mixed-use community. The residential aspect of the development primarily consists of one and two-bedroom flats, supplemented by a selection of townhouses and three-bedroom flats. This varied accommodation aims to cater to a wide range of housing needs in the city.An exciting feature of the development is the creation of a new cycle and footbridge over the River Taff, improving connectivity between Grangetown and Butetown. Additionally, the scheme proposes a new riverside park, which will add green space for residents and visitors alike. The development also includes plans for vehicle and cycle parking, along with a water bus stop, further enhancing the transport links in the area.To support this growth and maintain a pleasant urban environment, two multi-storey car parks are planned at the north and south ends of the site. These will provide a total of 924 car parking spaces, with 708 allocated for residents and 216 for office use. The car parks are strategically designed to reduce street congestion, contributing to a ‘largely traffic-free’ environment in the development area. The Embankment project, with its comprehensive approach to urban renewal, marks a significant step forward in the development of Cardiff’s city centre, promising a blend of modern living, business opportunities, and recreational spaces for the community.
