Wirral Council is set to progress with ambitious regeneration plans aiming to deliver over 17,000 new homes and create 6,000 new jobs within the next two decades. The initiative, grounded in the Birkenhead 2040 Framework, represents a significant commitment to transforming Birkenhead, alongside parts of Wallasey and New Ferry, in a bid to rejuvenate local communities and bolster the economy.

This extensive regeneration effort seeks to capitalise on recent government funding allocations to the authority, facilitating comprehensive infrastructure improvements, town centre developments, and the creation of vibrant new neighbourhoods. In addition to enhancing living conditions, these projects are designed to attract inward investment and foster job creation across the borough.

To ensure the successful implementation of these plans and the efficient utilisation of government grants, Wirral Council’s Policy and Resources Committee will review a proposal recommending the allocation of £2.7 million towards securing the necessary expertise for the next two years of the project’s delivery phase. This funding, drawn from the profits of the council’s joint venture, the Wirral Growth Company, will support the acquisition of skills essential for overseeing the regeneration’s intricate array of projects up until March 2026 and beyond.

As Wirral transitions from the planning to the execution stage of its regeneration strategy, the focus intensifies on establishing a cohesive approach to development. This includes refining the overarching vision into actionable projects, requiring a blend of in-house and external technical skills. The council’s dedication to accelerating these plans is evidenced by the comprehensive review undertaken by the Regeneration and Place directorate, aimed at streamlining project delivery.
