Sustainability and Net Zero: ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management Accreditation: What was new for UKREiiF 2024? August 21st, 2024 Mya Driver UKREiiF is ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management accredited, which means we put sustainability at the forefront of everything we do. Our dedicated UKREiiF team goes above and beyond to ensure that we are being as sustainable as possible, making each event eco-friendly and impactful. This accreditation has played a factor in our exponential growth over the years, and thanks to this success, we’re able to reinvest in our mission, continuously levelling up our sustainability efforts for both our business and events. Here’s what was new for 2024:Our generators, which helped power the whole site, ran entirely on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) instead of fossil fuels. We asked for our lanyards to be returned so we could send them to a company called The Recycle Yard, where they would get a second life in community arts and crafts projects. We have partnered with Ecolibrium, a leading organisation in the live event industry dedicated to driving the ‘Energy Revolution.’ Ecolibrium tackles the significant challenge of travel emissions by making low-carbon travel a core part of live event culture and aims to unite events in environmental restoration efforts by investing in ecosystem protection, regeneration, and clean energy generation. Our goal is to offset individual travel emissions while actively promoting more sustainable transportation methods across the industry. In 2024, we proudly introduced the inaugural Sustainability Champions initiative. Building on our mandatory sustainability pledge, which all exhibitors and partners must sign, this new program offered organisations the chance to distinguish themselves as Sustainability Champions. By demonstrating a commitment to at least three additional voluntary sustainability measures, participants could earn a coveted badge of honour. Some of the optional actions included:Utilising public transport to and from the event. Offsetting carbon emissions from hotel accommodations and travel during the show. Implementing energy-efficient lighting and equipment within their exhibition spaces. Promoting environmentally responsible behaviour among staff and contractors. As we continue our journey with ISO 20121, we are always seeking new ways to strengthen and elevate our commitment to this important accreditation.
