Weymouth’s town centre is set to undergo a major transformation after securing £19.5 million in government funding aimed at revitalising the area. This financial injection is earmarked for critical projects designed to facilitate new housing and business ventures, marking a new chapter in the town’s development.

The focus of the regeneration effort will be on three key sites earmarked for future enhancement. Essential repairs will be carried out on the harbour walls at both the Peninsula and North Quay, along with necessary infrastructure improvements. Furthermore, the initiative includes the renovation of the now-defunct ferry terminal on the Peninsula and the former local government office at North Quay, setting the stage for their renewed contribution to the town’s landscape.

Dorset Council has also announced plans to acquire land for prospective development projects, laying the groundwork for substantial future initiatives. Among the anticipated developments is a waterfront leisure complex on the Weymouth Peninsula, which promises to offer new, affordable housing options to the community.

In their announcement, Dorset Council expressed its long-standing commitment to stimulating economic growth in Weymouth. The demolition of the old council offices at North Quay is highlighted as a significant first step towards realising this vision. The council is now on the lookout for a development partner to bring these ambitious plans to life.

The award of the levelling up funds by the government is seen as a crucial support in achieving the council’s goals of bolstering the town centre’s long-term prosperity. The investment is expected to yield substantial benefits, including the provision of much-needed housing, job creation in the construction sector, increased visitor numbers, and a boost to local commerce.

While acknowledging that these projects will require time to fully materialise, the council is optimistic about the positive impact the regeneration will have on Weymouth, promising improvements for both the immediate future and for generations to come.
