Wirral Council has secured a pivotal £2.3 million grant from the Government’s Brownfield Land Release fund, greenlighting the planned demolition of Wallasey Town Hall’s North and South Annexes. As momentum gathers, contractors and developers are actively being sought to revitalise the site, with a vision of introducing up to 149 new homes.

The initial stages of the project are already underway, encompassing asbestos removal and the disconnection of utilities. The council is in the process of identifying the ideal contractor to spearhead the demolition and comprehensive site clearance.

The annexes, which formerly housed administrative offices, were vacated in March 2020 amidst the Covid pandemic. Notably, plans to decommission these structures were conceived even before the outbreak.

Council leader, Cllr Paul Stuart, shared his enthusiasm for the project: “This grant is a testament to the Government’s faith in Wirral’s ability and drive to champion borough-wide regeneration.”

The site’s inclusion in the Seacombe Masterplan underscores its significance. This masterplan delineates a roadmap for substantial housing redevelopment, integrated into the broader regeneration initiatives. Furthermore, the endeavour dovetails with Wirral Council’s 2021-2037 draft local plan. This plan champions a brownfield-first development ethos, and sets its sights on the reinvigoration of the Seacombe River Corridor, inclusive of the Town Hall Quarter.
