Student Accomodation: West Midlands UCB Plans 1,200 bed Student Accommodation Overhaul in Birmingham December 11th, 2023 Mya Driver University College Birmingham (UCB) has proposed a significant redevelopment of its student accommodation facilities, submitting a planning application to Birmingham City Council. The new development, named Cambrian Wharf, aims to centralise student living into a singular, modern structure. The proposed Cambrian Wharf project, located near the Jewellery Quarter on Brindley Drive, will feature two distinct blocks. The Canal Block, soaring at 35 storeys, and the 15-storey Courtyard Block, collectively will offer 1,205 bedrooms. This new accommodation will replace UCB’s current student residences, The Maltings and Cambrian Halls, consolidating them into a mix of 237 studios and 968 shared flats.Public consultation for this scheme commenced in June, with the university engaging with the local community for feedback. Should the council approve the plans, UCB anticipates starting the redevelopment by the end of 2024.Mark Payne, UCB’s Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, highlighted the project’s potential impact: “Our redevelopment plans aim to enhance the university’s capacity to provide top-tier, affordable, and well-situated student accommodation. This project not only broadens the options for student housing but is designed to meet the evolving needs of future students at UCB.”
