Torbay’s efforts to revitalise its townscape are gaining momentum, with Torquay’s Town Board praising the positive outcomes from recent partnerships aimed at enhancing the area. Torbay Council, alongside Willmott Dixon and Milligan, known collectively as WDM, are steering redevelopment projects with an eye on long-term benefits for the locale.

Since November 2023, when the collaboration was established, there has been considerable forward movement on several high-profile regeneration projects funded by the £21.9 million Town Deal. The Torquay Town Board, a pivotal component in securing this funding, regularly convenes to assess progress on these ventures. Their discussions focus on the Torquay Town Investment Plan, designed to uplift the town centre with new housing, job creation, and improved infrastructure.

Upcoming months are expected to bring about further announcements regarding revised options for Town Deal projects, with public engagement opportunities slated to help shape the community’s future.

One significant undertaking is the redevelopment of The Strand harbour area, which began in late 2023. This project promises to transform the waterfront into a pedestrian-friendly plaza, complete with a new tribute to Agatha Christie, enhancing its appeal as a hub for local businesses and investors.

Cllr Chris Lewis, Torbay’s Cabinet Member for Place Development and Economic Growth, highlighted the critical role of both public and private investment in driving these initiatives. According to Lewis, the appointment of WDM in 2023 has galvanized further commercial interest, helping to position Torbay as an attractive location for living, working, and investing.

The partnership’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, with Vince Flower, Chair of the Torquay Town Board, acknowledging the effective collaboration. He expressed optimism about the future developments and the shared vision for Torbay’s enhancement.

In 2023, Torbay Council signed a multi-million-pound deal at the UK’s Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF) and plans to participate again in 2024, signalling ongoing commitment to the region’s development.
