Swale Council Approves Duchy of Cornwall’s 2,500‑Home Faversham Development March 11th, 2026 Mya Driver A major Duchy of Cornwall development of up to 2,500 homes in South East Faversham has secured approval from Swale Borough Council, enabling a long‑planned expansion of the Kent market town. The council backed the scheme despite more than 460 objections focused on traffic, environmental pressures and local infrastructure capacity. The neighbourhood will be built on Duchy land near Brenley Corner between the M2 and A2. Designed as a long‑term project delivered over around 20 years, the development includes new homes, extensive green space and multiple community facilities. Detailed permission has been granted for the first 261 homes alongside commercial units, a water recycling centre and a new A2 access road. Across the masterplan, the Duchy proposes approximately 400 homes for social rent and around 475 additional affordable homes, forming a significant portion of the overall housing provision. Around half of the neighbourhood is planned as green space, including meadows, woodland, parks and allotments. Settlement gaps will be retained to maintain separation between Faversham and nearby villages, supporting landscape character. The masterplan is presented as a sustainable urban extension, featuring walking and cycling routes, renewable and low‑carbon energy systems and an integrated water‑recycling facility. Key community infrastructure will include a primary school, health centre, sports pitches, shops and a community hub. Councillors voted 11–5 in favour of the first phase, allowing the project to move ahead subject to planning conditions and legal agreements. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 or 2028, with delivery of up to 150 homes per year. The Duchy of Cornwall has owned the land since 1999.
