Shrewsbury’s town centre is on the brink of a major transformation following the unveiling of an ambitious strategy aimed at enhancing movement and public spaces. Titled ‘Shrewsbury Moves’, the initiative seeks to foster a more inviting environment through innovative traffic management and the creation of expansive public areas. With an open consultation process underway, the strategy has garnered unanimous support across political lines, highlighting its community-focused vision.

The strategy, a brainchild of the Big Town Plan Partnership, proposes the introduction of traffic loops to mitigate through-traffic in the town centre and the development of more accessible public spaces. This move is part of a broader masterplan vision to elevate the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, making Shrewsbury an even more attractive place for living, working, and leisure.

Councillor Ian Nellins expressed his satisfaction with the positive feedback received since the strategy’s January launch, emphasizing the collaborative effort that transcends Shropshire Council’s involvement. He encouraged public participation in the consultation to ensure the community’s voice shapes the final outcomes.

The consultation period extends until March 22, with various platforms available for public engagement, including an interactive website and a physical display at St Mary’s Church. Weekly sessions are planned to facilitate direct dialogue between residents and the partnership’s representatives.

Labour’s Councillor Alan Mosley and Green Party’s Councillor Julian Dean have both highlighted the strategy’s potential to revolutionize public transport and enhance walking and cycling infrastructure. They stressed the importance of securing adequate funding and community input to realize these ambitious goals.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Rob Wilson hailed the strategy as a step towards a cohesive transport solution for Shrewsbury, underscoring the necessity for bold measures to address the town’s complex challenges.

With a vision that extends beyond mere infrastructure improvements, ‘Shrewsbury Moves’ promises to pave the way for a more connected and vibrant town centre, driven by the collective aspirations of its community.
