The Riverside Shopping Centre, once a bustling hub in Shrewsbury, is set for a transformative redevelopment as plans to close and demolish the structure are underway. Shropshire Council has revealed an ambitious vision for the site, marking a significant leap towards revitalising the town centre with a modern, community-focused approach.

Secured by the council for £51m in January 2018, the Riverside Centre’s future includes the creation of a vibrant public park, inviting restaurants, and versatile facilities. This redevelopment forms a key element of a larger scheme designed to rejuvenate the heart of Shrewsbury, aiming to forge stronger links between the town centre and the riverfront while introducing contemporary amenities such as a new cinema and office spaces.

Located on the historic site of the Smithfield cattle market, the centre’s forthcoming demolition is a response to a longstanding need for rejuvenation. As the community awaits a decision on the planning application submitted last year, the project, named the Smithfield Riverside project, is poised to benefit significantly from a £19m investment from the government’s levelling-up fund.

Ian Nellins, Conservative deputy leader of Shropshire Council, conveyed his excitement about the project’s potential to catalyse job creation and usher in new investment opportunities for the town centre. He reiterated the council’s resolute intention to rejuvenate the Riverside Centre and expressed satisfaction with the progress being made in this pivotal redevelopment phase.

The project’s initial phase will see the establishment of a new park and a multi-purpose area, anticipated to greatly benefit the local community. Mr Nellins emphasised the council’s commitment to maintaining the unique identity of Shrewsbury, fostering a supportive environment for local, independent businesses, and preserving the town’s distinctive allure.
