The former HMS Daedalus military base in Hampshire is set to undergo a significant redevelopment, following planning approval for a substantial housing-led waterfront scheme in Lee-on-the-Solent. The project, orchestrated by the Daedalus Development Company under the architectural vision of Acme Architects, aims to blend restoration with modernisation.

Central to the redevelopment plan is the careful restoration of historic buildings on the site, including the World War One hangars facing the Solent. These iconic structures are envisioned to serve as a majestic gateway to the new development, housing The Hovercraft Museum and providing a venue for local events and community gatherings.

The ambitious scheme encompasses nearly 350 homes of varied dimensions, 24,500 square metres of employment space, 48 retirement or care apartments, 5,200 square metres of commercial space, along with public open spaces. This mixed-use development aims to inject new vitality into the former naval base, which holds historical significance for its pivotal role in the evolution of the modern Navy and its contributions during D-Day in June 1944.

This landmark regeneration initiative is a collaborative endeavour between Patron Capital, MurrayTwohig Developments, and Orwell Real Estate, who were chosen by Homes England as the development partners for the site last year.

David Twohig, co-founder of MurrayTwohig Development and CEO of Daedalus Development Company, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the planning approval, stating, “This approval marks a significant milestone for Daedalus Waterfront, one that will ensure the site’s future whilst bringing the energy and buzz back to Daedalus.”

With a green light from the planning authorities, Daedalus Waterfront is on course to transform into a vibrant residential and commercial hub, whilst preserving and celebrating its rich historical essence.
