Investment and regeneration plans for Nottinghamshire’s iconic County Hall are underway, guided by extensive feedback from residents, businesses, and stakeholders. The County Council’s decision to vacate the historic building next year, due to high maintenance costs, has prompted a new vision for the site.

A survey conducted this spring revealed strong support for preserving the main building, with 85% of respondents, including 665 business owners and 448 council employees, advocating for its retention. The feedback emphasised the potential of the site to boost local regeneration and economic growth. Key findings include:

– 86% value the views of the site from across the river and from Loughborough Road.

– 70% see the car park’s development as an opportunity for regeneration.

– 77% support improvements around the riverside.

– 73% believe the site’s development would aid economic growth.

– The majority favour a mixed-use development, including new homes and hospitality businesses.

Various developers and regeneration experts also praised the site’s unique riverside location during informal market testing. This input, combined with the survey results, will shape an initial business case set for completion later this summer. A full business case is expected by autumn, with developer shortlisting scheduled for the New Year.

Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Ben Bradley expressed gratitude for the feedback, stating, “It was vital we listened to what residents, businesses, partners, and developers had to say as we know how important this iconic local landmark is to us all. It was encouraging that we had so much positive and useful feedback, so thank you.”

Councillor Keith Girling, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management, added, “What happens to this building affects a lot of people – so we’re really pleased with the feedback we’ve had. It is helping us come up with a business plan that will hopefully be welcomed by the majority.”

This redevelopment initiative is expected to be a focal point at various property networking events in Nottinghamshire, highlighting Nottinghamshire’s commitment to revitalising the area. The plans will also feature prominently in upcoming construction investment events in Nottingham, providing valuable insights into the future of County Hall and its potential to attract substantial investment and development opportunities.

Commercial, development, legal, and technical advice will be sought from Arc Partnership and property consultants Montagu Evans to ensure the project’s success, balancing financial sense for taxpayers with minimal risk.
