Nottingham – Development, in the Heart of the UK April 5th, 2023 Mya Driver The East Midlands has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to supercharge its economy and create tens of thousands of new jobs via three landmark developments of national significance.These new plans could create 84,000 jobs and add billions in value to the regional economy.The developments cover the size of three Olympic Parks with transformational opportunities around three main growth clusters:Toton & Chetwynd East Midlands HubEast Midlands Airport AreaRatcliffe-on-Soar Power Station SiteGovernment has highlighted the pioneering approach of the new EM Devco as a model for accelerating development, realising large-scale potential and achieving locally-led high quality growth.EM Devco is led by five local authorities but brings together the ambition of partners from business, universities, and government.Ratclffe-on-Soar Power Station area: the UK’s last coal-fired power plant, due to close in 2025, and identified as the symbolic focal point for the development of net zero energy and industrial technologies into market-ready products and services. It sits alongside East Midlands Parkway, now confirmed as the site of the region’s high-speed rail station.East Midlands Airport Area: the UK’s largest dedicated freight-handling airport is also the centrepiece of the Government-approved East Midlands Freeport and is expected to see significant commercial and residential development.Toton & Chetwynd Area: A prime development site of around 200 hectares that has been earmarked for the development of an exemplar 21st century mixed-use community and innovation campus. The model development between Nottingham and Derby also includes the site of a proposed new Network Rail station with links across the region.
