London Borough of Newham has finalised the purchase of a substantial housing development in Harlow. This acquisition includes a fifteen-story block of flats, located strategically by the railway station roundabout between Elizabeth Way and Edinburgh Way, consisting of 172 homes. This development is conveniently situated near key amenities such as Addison House Surgery and Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Originally envisioned as a key part of Harlow’s regeneration, the development is now under London Borough of Newham’s remit. The council’s plan involves allocating a portion of these flats to provide housing solutions, with the remaining units available at market rates.

This move is part of London Borough of Newham’s strategy to increase the supply of housing in response to the needs of its residents. At least 50% of the flats will be used for housing solutions, contributing positively to the community. The acquisition aligns with London Borough of Newham’s ongoing efforts to enhance housing availability and affordability in the region.

Harlow Council, initially given the option to purchase the development, decided not to proceed with the acquisition. This has paved the way for Newham Council to step in and take over the project.

This purchase marks a significant step for London Borough of Newham, as it is their first acquisition of a residential development outside of London. The council’s initiative aims to create a positive impact on the housing market by providing more affordable and accessible housing options.

Shaban Mohammed, Newham’s cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, highlighted the importance of this acquisition in meeting the council’s housing objectives. The Burnt Mills development is seen as a vital component in Newham’s broader plan to enhance the quality and availability of housing in the area.
