National Trust to Submit £25m Plans for Castlefield Viaduct June 7th, 2024 Mya Driver The National Trust is preparing to submit a planning application this summer for the transformation of the remaining 150 metres of the grade two-listed Castlefield Viaduct into a ‘sky park’. The project aims to connect Deansgate tram stop with Pomona Island.The initial 180 metres of the viaduct were converted into a temporary park in 2022. The expanded project, designed by BDP, will feature seven distinct areas:– **Castlefield Platform** – a welcome area near Deansgate tram stop– **Global Garden** – an area celebrating international plants– **Village Hub** – a community space for gardening and events– **Strawberry Garden** – inspired by 19th-century recreation gardens– **The Lookout** – an open-air viewing area– **The Cottonopolis** – reflecting Manchester’s industrial past– **Pomona Walk** – a tree-top walk leading to Pomona IslandAn additional access point near Mancunian Way is also being considered.The project, estimated at £25 million, has already secured significant funding.
