Council-owned brownfield site ready for 808 homes March 27th, 2024 Mya Driver Marina Village is a 25-hectare brownfield site owned by Westmorland and Furness Council. It is ready for the development of more than 800 much-needed new homes, starting to come through from 2026. Could you support that vision?Phase 1 is a six-hectare section of the site that has been remediated using £5.5 million of funding from Cumbria LEP’s Getting Building Fund. Phase 2 covers the remaining 19 hectares, using £24.8m of funding from Homes England’s Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land fund. Phases one and two combined, which has the working title of Marina Village, have the capacity to accommodate 808 new homes, a nature conservation area and new public open spaces – a vital part of Barrow’s wider regeneration agenda, creating a vibrant community, providing new housing in the heart of the town near to centres of education, major employers and local shops and businesses, changing perceptions of Barrow as a place to live. The superb waterside site in the heart of a town with an exciting regeneration ambition overlooks Barrow’s two historic docks set to the backdrop of the iconic Lakeland fells. It will make the most of its unique dual dock aspect, opening up and engaging with its historic port infrastructure, embracing its heritage whilst repositioning the docks as a modern, desirable and attractive place to be.The waterfront neighbourhood will offer a new, contemporary housing choice within walking distance of Barrow town centre and the new University of Cumbria campus. This is just the start as they look to work with public and private sector partners to draw on the combined assets, heritage, people, infrastructure, buildings and landscape to create a place that people choose to live in, work in, visit and invest.Everything is in place to get this project going.
