Investment: London Hot Tip: Enfield Town Set for Transformation with Public Consultation February 14th, 2024 Mya Driver Residents of Enfield Town have been invited to share their thoughts on the initial stage of an eagerly anticipated transformation of the area. The consultation is part of the ‘Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhoods’ scheme. This project aims to rejuvenate the town centre with new public spaces, pedestrian crossings, junction improvements, and footpaths following a £6m grant from Transport for London (TfL).This round of consultation marks a crucial step, being the final statutory requirement before the council proceeds with the changes. The first phase of the scheme includes plans for a new public square, currently referred to as ‘Saddlers Mill Square’, at the convergence of Little Park Gardens and Church Street. This area will become a pedestrian zone, enhancing the town’s walkability and aesthetic appeal.Additionally, the plan details the relocation and upgrade of the Cecil Road pedestrian crossing and the creation of a diagonal footpath through Library Green, offering a quicker route between the town centre and Town Park. Further adjustments include modifications to traffic regulations, such as waiting and loading times and access rules for Little Park Gardens, alongside a redesign of the Church Street and Cecil Road junction. The council is also considering the repurposing of some on-street parking spaces to make room for the new developments, with proposals for dedicated motorcycle and disabled bays. The ‘Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhoods’ project aspires to enhance walking, cycling, and public transport facilities to encourage a shift away from car usage and towards more sustainable transportation options. It aims to invigorate public spaces within the town centre, creating an environment that supports leisure and community activities. This ambitious project will be executed in phases as funding allows, with future stages to introduce additional improvements such as a plaza outside Enfield Town Station and segregated cycle lanes on Cecil Road.Following the consultation, the council will compile a report summarising public feedback, which will inform the decision-making process on implementing the project. This report will be made available to the public, ensuring transparency and community involvement in the town’s development plans.
