Honey, a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) housebuilder backed by OakNorth Bank, is set to enhance Yorkshire’s residential scene with two new housing schemes in Huddersfield and Maltby. The initiative, supported by a £12.2 million loan from OakNorth, aims to deliver 252 new homes that combine modern style with sustainability.

Founded in October 2022 by former Avant Homes CEO Mark Mitchell, honey has quickly distinguished itself by constructing homes that focus on innovative design, space optimisation, and environmental sustainability. Each home is built to include features like bi-fold doors, custom-designed kitchens, boutique-style bathrooms, and electric vehicle charging points, adhering to the Future Homes Standard which ensures they produce 75-80% fewer carbon emissions.

The Huddersfield project, located in Fenay Bridge, will consist of 67 detached and semi-detached homes, including 13 affordable units. This site is strategically placed within commuting distance to major northern cities such as Leeds and Manchester. Meanwhile, the Maltby development will offer 185 homes, 46 of which will be affordable units, located near the town centre and a short drive from Rotherham.

Mark Mitchell expressed enthusiasm about the progress of honey, stating, “With the launch of honey just under 18 months ago, I’m delighted my vision of building new homes that deliver a combination of style, substance, and sustainability continues to be realised.” He also praised OakNorth Bank for their entrepreneurial approach and swift deal closures, contrasting this with experiences at larger lenders.

Damien Hughes, Senior Director of Property Finance at OakNorth, highlighted honey’s impressive reputation for unique and sustainable home building, and reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting SME housebuilders like honey, acknowledging their crucial role in enriching local communities and economies.

The partnership between honey and OakNorth Bank marks a significant step forward in providing stylish, sustainable housing solutions in Yorkshire, catering to the growing demand for quality living spaces close to major towns and commercial hubs.
