Housing & Residential: Harlow’s £20m Arts Quarter Revamp Gets Green Light April 16th, 2024 Mya Driver Harlow District Council has recently approved a £20 million regeneration plan for the town’s arts quarter, aiming to enhance its appeal as a vibrant cultural hub. The endorsed project, unveiled last Wednesday, includes the construction of a new live performance and music venue adjacent to the Harlow Playhouse, which will also see significant enhancements under the new scheme. The redevelopment will replace the demolished Occasio House with a multi-use building offering commercial and community space on the ground floor, topped with 47 one- and two-bedroom apartments. This initiative promises to revitalise the western area of the Playhouse by introducing a public square designed for events and outdoor performances, alongside new cinema and dining options.Additional developments are set to include an arts-led Pavilion linked to the Harlow Playhouse, which will house a performance space, a music school, and a recording studio. This space will also feature a contemporary café, restaurant, and bar. Complementing these will be new studios for arts and entertainment, and versatile spaces intended for smaller performances and community gatherings.Despite concerns raised about parking availability, including for Blue Badge holders, and safety around the play area, council officers expressed satisfaction with the planned provisions.Cllr James Leppard of the planning committee highlighted the project’s potential to enhance Harlow’s longstanding artistic heritage and its capacity to attract visitors. “This initiative is not just an isolated improvement but a significant enrichment within the broader context of our town centre’s regeneration,” said Cllr Leppard. The redevelopment is expected to draw attention and boost participation in the local arts, music, and drama scenes.
