Stafford Borough Council has unveiled its intention to purchase the Guildhall Shopping Centre, marking a significant step in its ambitious plan to revitalise the town. This strategic move, announced on Tuesday, aims to transform the centre, which currently comprises approximately 20 retail and business units.

This announcement follows closely on the council’s decision to acquire the former Co-op department store on High Street, indicating a concerted effort to rejuvenate key areas of the town. The Co-op site is set to be redeveloped into a vibrant hub, featuring a combination of retail, food courts, residential spaces, and a market.

The latest proposal includes not only the shopping centre but also the attached multi-storey car park and office spaces. The council is preparing to present a detailed business case, outlining various redevelopment options. Importantly, the council plans to actively engage with residents, seeking their input on the proposals in the coming year.

Currently, the Guildhall Shopping Centre is operating with a limited number of shops, such as The Fragrance Shop and Eurochange. However, the council’s vision extends beyond mere refurbishment. A report to the council’s cabinet scheduled for December 7th highlights the large scale of the property and the council’s intention to collaborate with a development partner. This partnership aims to not only redevelop the site but also to safeguard the interests of existing businesses in the vicinity, including the Body Shop and F Hinds jewellers.

Stafford Borough Council’s proactive approach signals a transformative phase for the town, with the Guildhall Shopping Centre poised to become a focal point in this regeneration journey.
