New City Vision, in collaboration with Glasgow-based architects O’DonnellBrown, has presented ambitious plans to Glasgow City Council for the revitalisation of Govan Graving Docks, a significant step towards establishing a vibrant community in the area.

The proposed project envisions the construction of 304 new residences along the southern edge of the site, expanding the Govan community and breathing life back into the historic 19th-century docks. Spearheaded by New City Vision, the initiative forms part of a comprehensive masterplan to rejuvenate all three docks, introducing modern and dynamic functionalities that reconnect the people of Glasgow with the waterfront.

The submitted plans outline the development of Dock No1 for historic ship repair, with future phases encompassing the creation of a distinctive heritage park to benefit both the new and existing Govan community. Additionally, the restoration of the Pumphouse, the sole surviving structure on the site, is included in the ambitious masterplan, aiming to transform it into a thriving destination for visitors and the local community.

Focusing on regenerating the site into a lively communal space, the proposals reveal that the new housing will occupy only 20% of the total site footprint. After the completion of the regeneration, an impressive 80% is intended to be transferred to community ownership.

The submission signifies the conclusion of an extensive period of community consultation facilitated by the developers. This inclusive process involved multiple public exhibitions dedicated to residential proposals and the design of an active travel route and riverside park. The commitment to engaging with the community extended to guided site visits, immersive tours, presentations, and meetings with various community groups, ensuring transparency and active involvement.

Harry O’Donnell, Chairman of New City Vision, expressed his delight at reaching this milestone in the project, emphasizing the sensitivity of the plans in complementing the broader vision. Acknowledging the significant community input gathered over the past two years, O’Donnell looks forward to ongoing engagement as the proposals progress through the planning process. The planning application was submitted to Glasgow City Council in December 2023, with a decision expected in spring 2024.
