Dundee’s city centre is set for a significant transformation, as new regeneration plans emerge from a strategic partnership between Dundee and the Scottish and UK governments. This initiative focuses on augmenting the city centre’s housing, following a decision not to award Dundee investment zone status. The partnership seeks new funding models to attract Build To Rent developers for creating city centre housing, alongside launching a pilot scheme for carbon-neutral social rented projects.

This development comes ahead of the Autumn Statement, with a business case and series of proposals aimed at establishing Dundee as a centre for substantial investment. The plans are designed to tackle poverty and create new high-quality jobs throughout the city. Leaders propose a new model for stimulating growth and investment, building on existing initiatives like The Tay Cities Regional Deal and emerging projects such as Eden, the Life Sciences Innovation District, and the Abertay cyberQuarter.

The government is also asked for multi-million-pound capital funding to transform the city centre, including the redevelopment of surplus retail accommodation. There are proposals for tax incentives to support regeneration by transforming vacant and under-used buildings, as well as support for a skills and employability hub focused on growth sectors like digital and data. This hub aims to help unemployed young people in Dundee find sustainable employment.

Councillor Steven Rome, Convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee, highlighted the importance of this business case, which is based on the ‘Our Future City Centre’ vision. The vision is essential for attracting and retaining talent in Dundee and is a part of the council’s ambitious 30-year City Centre Strategic Investment Plan. Despite past challenges, Dundee continues its journey of growth, seeking further investment and support.

This initiative aligns with a collective commitment to fostering economic growth, tackling poverty, and creating high-quality job opportunities in Dundee. By leveraging expertise and resources, the plan aims to provide appropriate education, skills, and training needed to attract more jobs to the city, ultimately supporting Dundonians in gaining employment.
