Brighton and Hove City Council is set to consider acquiring land in Hove to build 300 new homes. The proposal, which will be discussed at the council’s new cabinet meeting on 27 June, involves a partnership between the council and affordable housing provider Hyde Group under the initiative Homes for Brighton and Hove.

The plan aims to develop affordable housing on the Sackville Trading Estate, offering a mix of council-rented and shared ownership homes. The council-rented homes would be let at social rent levels to individuals on the city’s housing register. There are currently over 7,500 households on the register, with nearly 1,800 in emergency and temporary accommodation.

Homes for Brighton and Hove has previously developed 346 affordable homes across two sites, Denman Place in Coldean and Clarendon Place in Portslade, with 176 of these being council-rented at social rent levels.

The proposed purchase is contingent upon obtaining new planning permission, as the existing permission covers the development of supported housing. The project will only proceed if this new planning application is approved.
