Two leading UK-based energy firms, AMP Clean Energy and Pulse Clean Energy, have announced major investment milestones in August 2025, securing a combined total of over £495 million to expand their Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) operations across the country. These investments signal growing institutional confidence in battery storage as a key enabler of the UK’s net-zero and energy resilience strategies.

AMP Clean Energy has received a £50 million equity investment from the UK’s National Wealth Fund (NWF) to accelerate the deployment of its distributed battery storage projects, known as Battery Box sites. These systems are strategically located near demand hubs including homes, schools, and hospitals, helping to strengthen local electricity grids, support industrial decarbonization, and deliver practical low-carbon infrastructure nationwide.

Our Battery Box programme is designed to bring energy storage where it’s needed most, close to consumers, said a spokesperson for AMP Clean Energy. This support from the National Wealth Fund is a powerful vote of confidence in our mission to make the energy transition real and tangible in communities across the UK.

Meanwhile, Pulse Clean Energy secured a £175 million financing package backed by a consortium of banks including Santander, CIBC, Investec, and the National Wealth Fund, alongside equity from the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario (IMCO). The financing supports Pulse’s flagship Hyde BESS project (42MW/100MWh) and advances its goal of developing over 1GW of battery storage capacity across the UK.

In a further boost, Pulse announced the same day it had closed an additional £220 million in financing from six international banks, bringing its August funding total to £395 million. These funds will enable the company to continue repurposing former fossil fuel generation sites into grid-scale battery storage facilities, contributing to a more flexible and sustainable UK power system.

These strategic investments mark a pivotal step in building the next generation of UK energy infrastructure, said a Pulse Clean Energy representative. Our storage solutions are essential for unlocking renewable energy, balancing the grid, and moving confidently toward net zero.

These investments not only underscore the importance of BESS in delivering cleaner, more resilient electricity systems but also reflect a maturing financial ecosystem for large-scale battery assets in the UK.
