Medway Council has initiated a public consultation on the Local Plan, a pivotal document that will influence the region’s development for the next 15 years and beyond. Beginning Monday, 15 July, the consultation seeks input from everyone living and working in Medway to shape the future of the area.

This consultation is a significant opportunity for developers to stay ahead of potential opportunities. The Local Plan addresses various aspects of community life, including housing, employment, town centre revitalisation, and improved facilities such as schools, health centres, and local transport. The plan also emphasises better access to green spaces, parks, and play areas, ensuring sustainable growth in Medway up to 2041.

Three broad development options are under consideration:

1. Urban regeneration

2. Dispersed growth

3. A blended strategy focusing on urban regeneration and brownfield sites while also considering greenfield sites.

The Local Plan is not solely about new homes and businesses; it aims to achieve a balance between development and the preservation of Medway’s natural and historic environment. Central to the plan are the needs of the environment, climate change, the local economy, and the community, driving principles for sustainable growth.

Medway Council Leader, Cllr Vince Maple, encourages residents to participate: “Please take this opportunity to have your input on the Local Plan. It’s important that the final plan is shaped by Medway residents, so that as many people as possible can help drive this vision of Medway.”

Cllr Simon Curry, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, added: “This is an exciting moment for Medway, and a chance to improve the quality of life for us and future generations. The environment we live in has a direct impact on health and wellbeing, and so it’s important we can help improve our environment as best we can.”

This plan will significantly shape Medway’s landscape and development prospects for decades to come.
