North Norfolk District Council has taken decisive action to address a long-standing eyesore by issuing a compulsory purchase order for the site formerly occupied by The Shannocks Hotel. This derelict parcel of land, which has been a blot on the landscape since the hotel’s demolition in 2021, is set for a significant makeover, marking a key moment in the coastal town’s development and investment landscape.

The hotel, a once majestic late Victorian structure, fell into disrepair in 2010 and remained a contentious issue until its eventual razing. However, the absence of subsequent development plans has prompted the council to step in, with Tim Adams, the Liberal Democrat leader of the council, noting that this move was a last resort after exhausting all other options.

Huddies, the current site owner, has expressed a continued commitment to redeveloping the property, despite the council’s actions. The company has sought further discussions with the council to clarify the future steps, amid assertions that the council’s interest may extend beyond the hotel site to the neighbouring Chequers Car Park area.

Liz Withington, representing Sheringham on the council, highlighted the community’s support for the initiative, indicating a widespread desire for the redevelopment of the area. This sentiment is mirrored by the council’s acknowledgment of the potential difficulties in recouping the full investment required for the purchase, especially given the council’s current financial challenges, including a nearly £1m deficit.
