Lambeth Council is aiming to deliver a minimum of 500 new affordable homes by the end of the decade. This initiative is part of the council’s comprehensive New Homes Programme, designed to significantly increase the number of homes available at council rent, facilitating a much-needed transition for families from the housing waiting list to permanent homes.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Danny Adilypour, highlights the council’s dedication to housing delivery, stressing the importance of partnership and collaboration in achieving these ambitious goals. Despite economic challenges, Lambeth is unwavering in its commitment to building the homes its residents need, utilising partnerships to enhance delivery capacity and seeking opportunities to increase the number of homes at council rent whenever feasible.

A core element of Lambeth’s housing strategy is a strong emphasis on resident engagement. The council prioritises communication with its community, especially in matters related to housing delivery and estate renewal. By embracing a resident-centred approach, Lambeth ensures that community feedback is integral to shaping future developments, promising transparent and effective communication.

Furthermore, Lambeth’s housing strategy addresses the management of contractors to improve the quality of repairs and resident satisfaction. Efforts to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping, including involvement in the Homewards Project, underscore the council’s holistic approach to housing challenges.

Councillor Maria Kay, Cabinet Member for Better Homes and Homelessness, acknowledges the community’s support and feedback on the new housing strategy. Commitments to address key issues, such as damp, are at the forefront of the council’s efforts, with annual reviews planned to monitor progress and ensure healthy living environments for residents.

In addition to housing delivery, the council is reviewing its housing allocations policy to ensure fairness and prioritise those in greatest need, reflecting Lambeth’s broader ambitions for equity and inclusion.

As Lambeth Council prepares to showcase its initiatives at the upcoming UKREiiF in May 2024, the focus remains on creating a borough where everyone can find a place to call home, emphasizing a collective and transparent effort to address the housing needs of its diverse communities.
