Bolton is on the brink of a major transformation as plans to demolish the Crompton Place shopping centre emerge, paving the way for a £300 million redevelopment of the town centre. This ambitious project aims to rejuvenate Bolton, creating a vibrant mixed-use area that will feature retail and leisure spaces, residential units, and health facilities, effectively connecting Victoria Square with Bradshawgate.

The initiative comes after Bolton Council acquired Crompton Place in 2018, subsequently facilitating the relocation of leaseholders to commence the demolition process scheduled for early next year. The redevelopment faces challenges, notably from a few remaining leaseholders, including Marks & Spencer, which retained access rights through Crompton Place despite closing its Deansgate store. However, following intricate discussions, the council is optimistic about reaching an agreement to expedite the project, coinciding with Primark’s relocation to the Market Place shopping centre by late 2024 or early 2025.

As the project unfolds, Bolton Council commits to transparency and community engagement, with plans for public consultations on the site’s future use. The council assures that the area will remain an integral part of the town centre’s landscape throughout the redevelopment process, avoiding prolonged periods of inaccessibility.

Council Leader, Coun Nick Peel, expressed enthusiasm about the project, viewing it as a transformative opportunity for Bolton’s town centre. This redevelopment not only promises to enhance the town’s aesthetic and functional appeal but also to strengthen its community and economic vitality.
